Stable, diversified economy

When you hear the name “Manitoba”, what might come to mind first is: farming. And it’s true, the province does boast some of the continent’s most productive agricultural land—but today that land plays host to so much more than just the growing of crops and livestock.

Like any group of wise investors, the province and its people have long recognized the need for diversification—and diversify they have, so that now Manitoba plays a leading role in an uncommonly wide array of industries and sectors. At the top of this list are: advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, mining and creative industries. And yes, Manitoba remains a centre for agribusiness, as well: everything from established major firms to exciting new ag-tech start-ups are headquartered here in the province.

This diversity of industry in Manitoba means a diverse export market, too. After its main trading partner the United States, the province maintains strong export relationships with countries including China, Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom and Indonesia. Top exports include pharmaceuticals, wheat, pork, canola and canola oil, busses, frozen vegetables and agricultural machinery. The province’s trade is further aided by the federal government’s participation in numerous trade agreements, including CUSMA (North America), CETA (Europe), CPTPP (Trans-Pacific), and others—a total of 14 international agreements that encompass more than 50 countries around the world.
