Brian M. Collie, Influential Leader, Mourned

v5BrianWith profound sadness we advise of the passing Wednesday, April 1, 2015 of Brian M. Collie, Chief Executive Officer of the Manitoba Real Estate Association (MREA).
A visionary leader and passionate advocate for building stronger communities, Brian’s life of service was built on a firm foundation of love for his family, his profession, and Manitoba communities. A husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather first, Brian dedicated most of his professional life to supporting and leading his second family: the MREA membership, volunteers and staff.
Beginning his real estate career in 1972 as a salesperson, Brian later created his own firm – C-21 Collie and Co. in 1981. His call to broader community advocacy began while serving as president of both the Winnipeg Real Estate Board and MREA in the late ‘80s. His commitment grew to a full-time occupation when he assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer at MREA in 1991.
“Brian’s depth of character and wisdom made him an invaluable mentor to countless people in organized real estate in Manitoba and across Canada,” said MREA president Roberta Weiss. “His endless dedication to improving and advancing the real estate profession while developing plans for better consumer protection has benefitted countless communities. His humble influence, friendship and gentle hand of guidance will be greatly missed,” Weiss said.
Brian’s vision extended well beyond Manitoba’s borders. He worked tirelessly to advocate provincially and federally to improve the professional lives of REALTORS® and the clients they serve.
In all he did, Brian’s primary focus was always to plan and deliver the best in member service, professional education, resources and support to MREA members. His natural gift for connecting people and their purpose led to countless creative partnerships and inter-association initiatives.
He supported volunteer leaders whose vision led to the creation of two legacy-building initiatives, The MREA Shelter Foundation and Manitoba Tipi Mitawa. The MREA Shelter Foundation is owned by every REALTOR® in Manitoba and supports shelter organizations across the province. Manitoba Tipi Mitawa is a groundbreaking home ownership program assisting First Nations families in realizing the dream of home ownership. With Volunteer Manitoba, Brian established the MREA Quality of Life Award, which each year recognizes volunteers improving the lives of Manitoba children. He also facilitated a 20-year ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity® Manitoba and a continuing community partnership with Siloam Mission in Winnipeg’s inner city.
“What we do for ourselves dies with us. What Brian did for others will live on,” said Weiss.
Brian will be deeply missed by his family, MREA volunteers and staff, and the real estate community.
